Crown Princess Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, most commonly known as Mia Thermopolis, is the protagonist in the Princess Diaries book series and live-action movies.
Early Life[]
Amelia "Mia" was born to artist Helen Thermopolis and Phillipe Renaldo (Renaldi in the film series) , the Crown Prince of Genovia. Due to Phillipe being unmarried and in his early twenties when Mia was born they decided to not tell her she was a princess. He figured she would never have to inherit the throne because he would have more children later in life.(which he didn’t,due to cancer.) Therefore, until she was fourteen she thought her father just had a role in the Genovian government. Ultimately because her parents never married Mia grew up in New York with her mom and her cat, Fat Louie, whom she got on her sixth birthday.
There are some differences in the films, such as Princess Mia being raised in an old San Francisco firehouse and her father dying two months prior to where the story begins
Becoming a Princess[]
Mia is informed of her princess status near the beginning of the first book. She is told this by father when he came to visit Mia and her mother. She is told in the Plaza Hotel and promptly dissolved into tears. She was 14 and a freshman in high school. She kept this secret from her friends, causing significant tension between them. Due to her clumsiness and alternative values, she has difficulty learning to be a princess and is reluctant to do so at first.
In the Disney film, the news is broken to her through her grandmother at the Genovian Consulate.
The Big Reveal[]
Books[]
In the Books, Mia's title is revealed to the press by Grandmere. Grandmere does this simply to get Mia acquainted with the press.
Movies[]
In the Movie, Paolo, Mia's stylist is the one to break the big secret. He is seen to be doing this for money, though it is not clear whether this was Paolo's intent from the beginning or if he was later bribed. Queen Clarisse seems to forgive Paolo because he is seen being called in to fix Mia just prior to the Genovian Independence Day Ball.
Relationships[]
Mia Thermopolis and Lilly Moscovitz were friends in school. Lilly was somewhat toxic to Mia, because Lilly needed to have something called an 'Attitude Adjustment'.
